Things that are certain in life are death, taxes, and no one having a good time in Westeros on Game of Thrones. If you thought that was going to change next season after the good guys scored some victories, star Kit Harington has some sobering words for you.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harington was asked about changes happening to characters for the next season. Here’s what he responded with:
“It’s important to stress at this point that I haven’t had any scripts, so this is all guess work for me. I think it’s going to get very bleak before if there is a happy ending. If there’s any sort of win or heroic moment for Jon and everyone else. I think it’s going to get very dark before it gets better. I think what we might see this season is those White Walkers and that Army of the Dead really come into force. So that’s going to be exciting to see. I don’t know what it means. I think with the whole “winter is finally here” business, it means everyone is going to have a really bad time.”
I’ll be honest, if things started to go well for everybody, I would be incredibly shocked. Even though Harington hadn’t seen any of Game of Thrones season 7 scripts by the time the interview was conducted, co-star Maisie Williams has finally gotten her hands on the screenplays, and confirmed that things may not go so well next season. Here’s what she shared via Twitter:

I’ve already outlined what I expect to happen with next season’s Game of Thrones, and I will add one other thing here, which I haven’t brought up before: Expect a lot more death this season — even more than fans are used to. My guess is that this will be the season where each group and lone character will finally meet up into a single group to take on the White Walkers. If everyone alive now would make it to that point, the group would be far too large, so expect series showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff to drastically thin the herd.
Game of Thrones season seven will premiere sometime in summer 2017 on HBO.
