A Geek’s Reaction to the New Luke Cage Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The Marvel Netflix series have been doing great — at least, as far as we can tell since the streaming service doesn’t release viewership numbers. The two shows that have premiered, Daredevil and Jessica Jones, keep getting renewed so that seems to be a promising sign.

The third standalone series on the way to The Defenders team up series is Luke Cage and a new trailer has been released. You can watch that here or below.

We’re still a few months away from the premiere of Luke Cage and yet we’ve already seen a surprising amount of footage for the series in terms of trailers. Not that these trailers are giving away the whole plot of the series or anything like that but it is a change in marketing direction for these Netflix series. Both Daredevil and Jessica Jones barely showed any footage leading up to their premieres but this series is giving us some great looks at the action.

The tone of the series is definitely steeped in Blaxploitation films that were popular in the 1970s which ties back to the creation of the original character. I love the soundtrack already with showrunner Cheo Coker emphasizing the importance of music in this show. Seems to me that Luke Cage will try for something like what Guardians of the Galaxy did and make the music it’s own character within the confines of the series.

This also leads me to wonder what the tone for the next two series, Iron Fist and The Defenders, will be like. Iron Fist was created around the same time as Luke Cage and was also in response to a popular film sub genre of the time — this time, namely, Hong Kong kung-fu films — so I can’t help but feel that it will borrow from something like Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon and other high octane martial arts films.

The Defenders seems like it will be something else entirely but the teaser that was released for that seems to be most in line with Daredevil. Considering the foundation for The Hand has been laid down in that series it would be an interesting starting point for the tone.

Marvel has also released a new poster for Luke Cage which you can see below.

The full 13 episode season of Marvel’s Luke Cage will premiere on September 30, 2016 at 12:01am PST on Netflix. Here’s the synopsis for the series:

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive who attempts to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But soon he is pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.
