With Marvel’s Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders all lined up to wrap up the original deal between Marvel and Netflix, you’re sure to ask, “What’s next?” Fortunately for us both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have been renewed, while The Punisher has been ordered to series, as well, so there’s a lot more to come.
Now we’re starting to get a few details about the next phase of the Marvel/Netflix side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Entertainment Weekly sat down with Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg and asked her if the second season would be more difficult because of The Defenders team up series. Here’s what she said:
“Yes, for sure. My colleagues Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie, who are doing Defenders, they’ve shared material. We’ve sat down for many conversations about what are they doing, what’s happening with Jessica? They want my input, they want all the different showrunners’ input on the characters that they’re most familiar with. Marvel was very smart in hiring those guys, because they’re really collaborative. They enjoy collaboration, which is not always the case, and they listen, and we listen to them. We’re really trying to find a way to respond to the things that they want to do, and them to respond to the things we want to do. So far so good. It’s working out. If they weren’t who they were as people, it could be very problematic. But they’re the absolutely right people to do this.”
Another difficulty would be following up David Tennant’s brilliant performance as season one antagonist Kilgrave. When asked how they were approaching the next antagonist Rosenberg mentioned that there will be more than one.
“Or antagonists, plural. No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don’t do that. The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that. You just go, ‘OK, we’re not doing that, so we have this open to us.'”
On The Punisher side a new casting rumor has shown up giving us an idea of who will be on team Punisher. MCUExchange is reporting that the upcoming show is casting for David Lieberman who is also known as the brilliant hacker Microchip. In the comics it’s Lieberman who seeks Frank Castle out for vengeance but in Daredevil season two one of the last things the character does is retrieve a DVD with the word Micro written on it. It could be that the Punisher will go out looking for the character in this live action interpretation.
Another interesting tidbit is that a redditor (via Heroic Hollywood) took a screen shot of the Netflix app on his phone which indicated that the series will be coming out in 2017. There was also a description of the series as well:
“After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he’ll become known as The Punisher.:
If this is true that means the Marvel/Netflix series will go from two seasons per year to three season per year. Considering that I estimated previously that at two series per year, we wouldn’t see any new Daredevil until 2019, three years after season two, this schedule makes for a far better release cycle.
One more note, Frank Castle star Jon Bernthal has been training (via his Instagram), and one could assume he’s getting ready for filming The Punisher.
