Suicide Squad actor Joel Kinnaman says his upcoming Netflix show Altered Carbon is the streaming service’s “answer to Game of Thrones.”
Netflix is producing a 10 episode debut season around author Richard K. Morgan’s acclaimed 2002 dystopian sci-fi novel, which they hope will compete with HBO’s swords and sex cultural juggernaut.
In an interview with The Independent, House of Cards star Kinnaman also compared the project to Blade Runner (1982).
He said: “It’s their biggest show so far. It’s their answer to Game of Thrones, in terms of ambition.
“But it’s a sci-fi series, it’s based on a book called Altered Carbon and it takes place 500 years in the future and the human body has lost it’s value because your soul and everything, its memories, are stored on a chip, in a stack at the top of your vertebrae.
“It’s a noir story that takes place in this world. There will be comparisons to Blade Runner, I’m sure.”
Kinnaman’s stock is rising fast, with his latest movie Suicide Squad breaking records at the worldwide box office despite bad reviews. The actor already has a working relationship with Netflix and is currently filming the fifth season of House of Cards, where he is reprising his role as social-media savvy Republican Governor Will Conway.
And the Killing star revealed his love for the show in which he plays opposite Kevin Spacey’s machiavellian U.S. President Frank Underwood.
He said: “It was the first time that I entered a show that I was already a fan of. I don’t think I ever went more than three days after a season came out before I finished it. And then Kevin in that role, I don’t know if there is any actor in that role who does it better.”
Kinnman’s also spoke his first big Hollywood lead role, in José Padilha’s 2014 remake of RoboCop, which he says he would approach differently if he got the chance to make it again.
He said: “On RoboCop, for example, in hindsight, that was my first lead in a big American film and had I got that role today, there was a lot of decisions that were made initially in that project that I would have had very strong opinions about.”
Altered Carbon is being executive produced by Laeta Kalogridis and Skydance Television. It also stars Martha Higareda, James Purefoy, Leonardo Lam, and Dichen Lachman. Stay tuned for more!
