Star Wars Han Solo Spinoff Casting Lando Calrissian & More

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

The second full-length Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer just premiered, and reintroduced us to the classic Star Wars character Darth Vader. Now it seems that the next anthology spin-off film will do the same with another beloved character: Lando Calrissian.

According to The Wrap, the untitled young Han Solo spinoff film is looking for someone to play the gambling lady’s man. We already know that Chewbacca will be back in this film, and, honestly, I would be more surprised if Lando didn’t show up in this film. While the outlet didn’t report any possible candidates for the part, there are rumors of either Michael B. Jordan or Donald Glover as possible casting choices.

There’s another slightly under-the-radar casting rumor that another Han Solo companion could be part of the film, but this time from the pages of the comic. Jeff Snieder from Mashable tweeted the following:

In the new canonical comic books from Marvel it was revealed that Han had married a woman named Sana Starros before the events of A New Hope. Here’s a comic panel of the character.

Admittedly, this is a guess at who the character is based on rumors from a film critic’s source, so not the most concrete news — but it wouldn’t be the first time a Star Wars film brought in a character from another Star Wars property. Forest Whitaker is playing a character named Saw Gerra in Rogue One, who first appeared in the cartoon Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Even if these casting rumors turn out to be true, there’s still a lot of questions as to what the movie would actually be about. I assume we’ll see that legendary sabacc game, where Lando loses the Millennium Falcon to Han, but other than that, the only thing I can think of is directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, along with writers Jon and Lawrence Kasdan are probably cooking up a heist film.

In a lot of ways I think this film will probably echo the Joss Whedon series Firefly which was itself based on Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon. A small crew of scruffy-looking nerfherders who aim to misbehave and be snarky sounds like an amazing time at the multiplex to me.

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story will star Alden Ehrenreich, and premieres in theaters on May 25, 2018.
