Marvel Studios continues its long path to Infinity War, which started back in 2008 with the original Iron Man. The two directors tasked with the responsibility of directing not one, but two Avengers films are Joe and Anthony Russo.
While originally announced as Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1 and Part 2, we know that only the first part will be Avengers: Infinity War, with the second film being a bit of a secret. IGN spoke with the Russo Brothers to ask them about who will be in the films and what they’ll be about. Here’s what Joe Russo said:
“I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie. In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.
Anthony Russo added:
“You always have to make sure that your choices feel organic to the storytelling, and really, you have to sort of structure them in the way that they need to be there. You have to have them, or they shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s a little bit of a dance between the two, where you have big eyes, and you want everybody included in the movie, but you have to go through the process of… what’s the best story that you can tell.”
Meanwhile over at Yahoo! Movies they were asked if one of the characters they’re introducing in Infinity War is Captain Marvel. Anthony responded with:
“If they ever cast that role, maybe. Do you know if they’ve cast it yet? That’s one we’re going to have to plead the fifth on.”
Obviously the director knows that Brie Larson has been cast and is likely to show up in the film. My best guess is that she will be in the movie but without her powers, as the character is a fighter pilot who gets her powers from space. We also know that her origins are being reworked for the solo Captain Marvel film which will be released after Avengers: Infinity War.
As for who is confirming their involvement in the next Avengers film, Vin Diesel took to Facebook to confirm that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be part of the film. Here’s what he said:
“Next year, you’ve got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming, and that whole concept started from you all saying, ‘When are you going to be in a Marvel movie, when are you going to be in a Marvel movie?’ And you remember the first picture after that Marvel meeting that I had, where I was standing with the Avengers thing in the background … there was an old Avengers copy behind me in the picture.
“What’s going to be surreal is, that picture is going to come to pass because now the Guardians will be included in Avengers: Infinity War and that’s incredibly exciting, incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting, and something that if you were a part of our page, you knew before everybody, or you were told before everybody.”
I don’t know how the Russos are going to fit everyone in, but I’ve speculated for years that the Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man franchises will be put to rest as a new generation of Avengers take up the mantle. That sounds like an end and a beginning to me.
Avengers: Infinity War will premiere in theaters on May 4, 2018, while the fourth film will debut May 3, 2019.
