A Geek’s Reaction To Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Teaser Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Christopher Nolan is one of the few directors out there today that can basically helm whatever he wants. After delivering Warner Bros. buckets of money with his Dark Knight trilogy, and his original films are always big box office smashes, even his worst movies are better than almost everything out there.

His next film is Dunkirk which is a World War II film about the massive evacuation of British soldiers from French shores. A new teaser has been released which you can check outbelow:

I’ve been let down by Nolan’s films before, but that may be because I do hold his movies up to a higher standard. I’m still wildly entertained and all of his film are visually arresting. These 60 seconds of Dunkirk are no exception which quickly sells the harshness of what these soldier faced.

If there is anything Nolan does better than making a movie it’s making a teaser trailer. The ticking clock as music ratchets up the suspense as the images of the sea and wind look cold and cruel. The final shot with all of the soldiers looking up at the sound of an incoming fighter plane gives you an instant concept of what kind of sitting ducks they were during the evacuation.

One of the more interesting things about this teaser is that, unlike most Nolan teasers for his original films, we have a very good idea what this film will be about. There usually tends to be an aura of mystery around these trailers and even the Dark Knight teasers were enigmatic.

The film stars Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and One Direction’s Harry Styles along with Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, and Cillian Murphy. Both Hardy and Murphy are longtime Nolan collaborators, but Michael Caine, who has been in every Nolan film since Batman Begins, is noticeably absent. I continue to have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll see him show up as Winston Churchill to give the “we shall fight on the beaches” speech:

“We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”

Dunkirk will premiere in theaters on July 21, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”
